Nestled in the heart of the vibrant DUMBO neighborhood, Almar stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of thoughtful, ingredient-focused dining. Located at 111 Front St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, this establishment has become a familiar landmark for locals and visitors alike who appreciate a dining experience that prioritizes quality and atmosphere over pretense. The restaurant captures the unique spirit of Brooklyn, blending an industrial aesthetic with a warmth that makes it an ideal destination for everything from a casual weekday lunch to a relaxed weekend gathering.
Stepping into Almar, guests are immediately greeted by an environment that feels both curated and comfortable. The design philosophy reflects the history of its surroundings, utilizing the architectural character of the area to create a space that feels authentic to its New York roots. It is a place where the pace of city life seems to slow down, allowing diners to focus on the simple pleasure of a well-prepared meal shared in good company. Whether you are a long-time resident of the borough or someone exploring the waterfront for the first time, the restaurant offers a consistent and welcoming presence.
What Makes Almar a Local Favorite
The reputation of Almar is built upon a commitment to consistency and a deep understanding of what makes a neighborhood restaurant truly successful. Rather than chasing fleeting trends, the kitchen focuses on the fundamentals of flavor and the importance of sourcing. Here are a few reasons why this location remains a staple in the Brooklyn dining scene:
Commitment to Quality Ingredients: The kitchen places a high value on the integrity of its components, ensuring that every dish is prepared with care and respect for the natural flavors of the produce and proteins used.
Atmospheric Design: The interior strikes a delicate balance between modern urban style and cozy comfort, providing a versatile setting that adapts seamlessly to various social occasions throughout the day.
Community-Centric Approach: By maintaining a focus on the neighborhood, Almar has cultivated a loyal following, acting as a reliable hub for those who live and work in the DUMBO area.
Attention to Detail: From the arrangement of the dining room to the pacing of the service, there is a clear emphasis on creating a seamless experience that allows guests to feel at ease from the moment they arrive.
The culinary approach at Almar is characterized by a sense of restraint and balance. Instead of overcomplicating plates, the chefs allow the quality of the ingredients to speak for themselves. This philosophy resonates with a modern audience that increasingly values transparency and simplicity in their food choices. By focusing on the essentials, the restaurant manages to deliver a dining experience that feels both sophisticated and accessible, avoiding the common pitfalls of overly elaborate presentations that often distract from the actual taste of the food.
Furthermore, the location at 111 Front St serves as a perfect anchor for those spending time in Brooklyn. Being situated in such a historic and visually striking part of the city means that a visit to the restaurant is often part of a larger experience, whether it involves a walk along the nearby waterfront parks or exploring the various art galleries and boutiques that define the neighborhood. The synergy between the restaurant and its environment is palpable, contributing to a sense of place that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Service at Almar is designed to be attentive without being intrusive, reflecting the professional yet relaxed nature of the staff. This balance is crucial in maintaining the welcoming vibe that the establishment is known for. Guests are encouraged to linger, enjoy their conversations, and appreciate the environment, which is a rare quality in the often fast-paced landscape of New York City dining. It is this human element, combined with a steady dedication to culinary standards, that keeps the restaurant relevant in an ever-changing industry.
A Lasting Impression
Ultimately, Almar represents the best of what a neighborhood restaurant can be. It is not merely a place to consume food, but a space that contributes to the social fabric of the community. By staying true to its core values of quality, comfort, and hospitality, it continues to serve as a reliable destination for those seeking a genuine Brooklyn experience. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to enjoy a meal or a welcoming spot to meet friends, Almar offers a consistent and high-quality experience that honors its location and its guests. We invite you to visit and discover why this Front Street establishment remains a cherished part of the local landscape.

I’ve lived in Dumbo for 5 years and I can confidently say this has been my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood for all 5 of them. The food is delicious, the vibe is cozy and the staff make you feel like you’re right at home. More

I wanted to like this place more, but what I had was only okay. The wine I had was great and went well with my mortadella pesto sandwich. But the focaccia bread was thin… maybe a 1/4 in for each side of the sandwich which is just not what I … More

Everything from the pasta, branzino, beef carpaccio, and grilled octopus was delicious. Came here on a Tuesday night at around 6:30 and it still was kinda busy despite it being a weeknight! Really Good service, great food. Would definitely recommend.

I'd go for the cute Christmas decor, rustic architecture, and prime location in DUMBO, but the food was just okay.
We ordered (a) spaghetti and meat balls $16, which was a little bland (b) Half Panini & Half Salad Lunch Special $22 USD.
The portions are small to moderate, as it is a lunch menu, so we had a second lunch 30 minutes afterwards.
But the service was friendly and they had a cozy decorations, which was fun for photos!

Our favorite local Italian spot in DUMBO / Brooklyn Heights. Staff is great, welcoming and attentive. The food is some of the best Italian we’ve had in NY. Would highly recommend coming here. Predominantly a local crowd even though it’s so close to heavy tourist traffic, which is nice. More

The food took forever and the service is very slow. Decent restaurant with decent prices and services. Although 4 stars since food was great and all, I don’t know if it stood out in any other manner. I mean it is a tourist trap at the end of the day. The kitchen definitely needed to step up especially when I see a lot of the tables were getting the same dishes.

Very unprofessional restaurant!! Avoid!!
I wasn't going to write this review, but when a shady restaurant wants to attack someone's review with lies, then I'll come with the receipts.
My entire family was coming into town (18 people in total) and we planned to be at the Dumbo carousel just before dinner time. Even though they have a very limited menu, we decided to call and make a reservation at AlMar, given their proximity to the carousel. We spoke with the restaurant the evening of Nov 7th to make the reservation for the following weekend (Nov 15th) and we asked for 5pm because half of our party consisted of children that needed to be in bed by 7:30pm. We were instructed that they wouldn't open until 5:30pm, but we decided that that would still work well. The following day, they sent through the confirmation email (attached).
Fast forward to Thursday evening and we received a message from AlMar letting us know that they have other bookings at our confirmed time and that they'll have to cancel our reservation unless we can move the entire group to 7:30pm. After reminding them that we needed an early time because of the children, they said they would then have to cancel the reservation (attached).
My assumption is a better opportunity presented itself to them so they decided to bump us. Luckily the team over at Cecconi's Dumbo stepped in on Friday afternoon, moved things around, and saved the day for my family.
If you happen to be in Dumbo, you're much better off going to Cecconi's. The food, drinks, and service are much better! I will never step foot in AlMar again and I highly recommend you do the same.

I have visited AlMar on many occasions, and I have always had a wonderful experience. The staff is incredibly kind and attentive. It’s a great spot for any occasion, but it feels especially cozy during the holidays. The food is absolutely delicious, and they offer an excellent selection of wines. Dining here is always enjoyable, and a great way to end the night is to take a stroll along the waterfront to see the city lights.

By New York standards it was surprisingly spacious and seating was ample. Quite a few long tables for bigger groups and the furniture and decor are better than most places in a similar price range. I was wondering why it wasn't more crowded but maybe the reason could be that the place is big and there are a lot of good eating pl toaces all around. The egg preparations were good and so was the crostini. Pancakes however were just normal.
All in all it was a good outing and I will definitely visit again.

My wife and I met a friend here last night and had a most unexpected next-level dinner experience. Soft shell crabs were outstanding, same for the tuna tartare, fiori di zucca, fava bean entree, Italian style pork ribs with broccoli rabe, and more. The wines by the glass: Erbaluce, Fanti Rosso dM, Etna Rosso were all perfect for this menu.
The staff here is on point and hardworking, clearly making every effort to keep things moving and keep everyone happy. I can’t say enough about it. Al Mar is a great restaurant.

The place has a nice atmosphere, but the food is definitely not the best you’ll find in the area. We ordered the white ragu pasta and the branzino. Unfortunately, the fish was full of bones, and the side salad was just some basic lettuce and tomato—nothing special at all. For the price they charge, the quality just isn't there. It was honestly pretty mediocre. I wouldn’t go back.
