A Taste of French Elegance in the Heart of Palo Alto
Nestled in the vibrant community of Palo Alto, California, Mademoiselle Colette stands as a refined destination for those who appreciate the artistry of traditional French patisserie and café culture. Located at 499 Lytton Avenue, this establishment serves as a peaceful retreat from the bustling pace of Silicon Valley, inviting guests to slow down and savor the nuances of authentic craftsmanship. The atmosphere is designed to evoke the charm of a classic Parisian boulangerie, where the focus remains steadfast on quality ingredients, time-honored techniques, and a genuine passion for the culinary arts.
Stepping into the space, patrons are greeted by the inviting aroma of freshly baked goods and the sight of meticulously prepared delicacies. The philosophy behind Mademoiselle Colette is rooted in the belief that food should be an experience that engages the senses. By combining the heritage of French baking with the local spirit of Palo Alto, the café has cultivated a reputation for excellence that resonates with both residents and visitors alike. Whether you are seeking a quiet corner for a morning coffee or a sophisticated treat to brighten your afternoon, the establishment offers a consistent level of quality that honors its European roots.
The Essence of the Mademoiselle Colette Experience
What sets this destination apart is a commitment to maintaining the integrity of classic recipes while ensuring every item is crafted with precision. The following elements define the core identity of the café:
Authentic French Techniques: Every creation is born from a deep respect for traditional methods, ensuring that the texture, flavor, and presentation align with the high standards expected of a true French patisserie.
Curated Ingredient Selection: The kitchen prioritizes the use of high-quality components, understanding that the foundation of exceptional flavor lies in the sourcing of fresh, premium ingredients that reflect the changing seasons.
A Welcoming Atmosphere: The interior design and service philosophy are centered on creating a warm, approachable environment where guests feel comfortable lingering over their selections, fostering a sense of community and connection.
Consistency and Craftsmanship: From the delicate layers of a pastry to the balance of a perfectly brewed beverage, the focus remains on the details, ensuring that every visit provides a reliable and delightful culinary encounter.
The dedication to these principles is evident in the daily operations of the café. By focusing on a refined selection rather than an overwhelming variety, the team at Mademoiselle Colette ensures that each item receives the attention it deserves. This approach not only preserves the quality of the offerings but also allows guests to explore the depth of French culinary traditions in a meaningful way. It is this balance of simplicity and sophistication that has allowed the café to become a staple of the Lytton Avenue corridor.
Beyond the food itself, the location plays a significant role in the overall experience. Situated in a prime area of Palo Alto, the café serves as a natural gathering point for professionals, students, and families. It provides a unique space where the intellectual energy of the city meets the relaxed, indulgent pace of a French café. This intersection of culture and comfort is what makes the establishment a notable part of the local landscape, offering a brief escape into a world where quality and tradition are held in the highest regard.
A Lasting Impression
Mademoiselle Colette continues to be a testament to the enduring appeal of well-made food and thoughtful service. By staying true to its vision of providing an authentic French experience in the heart of California, the café invites everyone to appreciate the beauty of a well-crafted pastry and the comfort of a welcoming space. Whether you are a long-time admirer of French cuisine or simply looking for a moment of respite in Palo Alto, a visit to 499 Lytton Avenue offers a refined experience that lingers long after the final bite. We invite you to discover the charm and dedication that define this local gem, where every detail is a celebration of the culinary craft.

Update:
Pain au chocolat is simply the best here. I wish they would offer to warm them up. They serve Mariage Frères tea here. Now they even have their own ice cream which I must try!!
Update: tried their grapefruit & rose sorbet. Would love to have the rose stronger in flavor. Grapefruit tends to come off stronger when paired with another flavor.

My go-to for breakfast and cakes. Love the pain au chocolat here. It never fail! The cakes are really good too. The only place I go for simple breakfast and cake in Palo Alto. The galette des rois is amazing during the January month. Staffs were always friendly during all the times I had been there. Weekend mornings are usually crowded.

We came on a Tuesday afternoon to get my birthday slice of cake and some tea. The place is small but very lovely and cozy, the place was not crowded. I liked the match of interior colors, wooden furniture and french music. The choice of … More

My favorite spot to read a book with coffee and a pastry, but get here early if you want a seat. There’s some outdoor seating in addition to indoor, but it’s a popular spot. The Kouign Amann is insanely good. French macaron latte was not too sweet and perfect. Ham and cheese croissant also great. More

New wonderful little place in downtown Palo Alto. The pastries are France and the coffee brings you back to Italy. There are not a lot of sitting place so weekend might be tricky, but worth it! The service is super friendly and the atmosphere makes me want to come again and again.

Cute, small location with their own unique pastries. They were slightly packed when I went. Otherwise, I could see myself chilling here with a drink and pastry to pass time. Got a goat cheese brioche, which was excellent! The goat cheese … More

DELICIOUS pastries and coffee. I am so surprised I never knew about this place and have lived nearby for a while now. I ordered the Paris Brest and loved the hazelnut cream. The other cakes, croissants, and confections looked amazing as well. I also really enjoyed my latte! The cafe ambiance is also very cute and located on a less busy corner with perfect natural lighting.

I’ve been a fan of Mademoiselle Colette since it opened in Menlo Park. This place should only have 5 stars, not 4.3! It has consistently delivered some of the best pastries and croissants I’ve ever had (and I’ve tried a lot of places). Everyone has always been so nice and I’ve often had to bring my kids.

The pastries are fantastic, far and away the best in palo alto. Don't miss the almond bear-claw-like pastry, but they're all good. The coffee is fine; seating is challenging. If you're taking the pastries home, you can savor them more comfortably.

The Lorraine Quiche from this place was so superb I went back the next day for more!!! My family also loved the almond croissant, lemon cake, and exotic tart! We visited the Palo Alto location and received excellent service. We will definitely be back if we visit this area again.
