Located at 8520 Fernald Ave in Morton Grove, Illinois, Pequod's Pizza stands as a landmark destination for those seeking a distinct approach to Chicago-style pizza. Since its inception, the establishment has cultivated a reputation that transcends the typical neighborhood pizzeria experience. It is not merely a place to eat, but a culinary institution that has refined the art of the pan pizza, drawing locals and visitors alike to its doors in the heart of Morton Grove. The atmosphere reflects a commitment to tradition, providing a welcoming environment where the focus remains squarely on the quality of the craft and the satisfaction of the guest.
What sets this location apart is its unwavering dedication to a specific style of preparation that has become synonymous with the name Pequod's. While many establishments in the region offer various interpretations of deep-dish or pan-style pies, this kitchen maintains a rigorous standard that prioritizes texture, flavor balance, and the integrity of its ingredients. The process is deliberate, ensuring that every order reflects the care and attention to detail that has defined the brand for decades. For those who appreciate the nuances of a well-executed crust and a robust sauce, the experience at Fernald Avenue offers a compelling look at how regional food culture evolves while staying true to its roots.
Defining Characteristics of the Pequod's Experience
The Signature Caramelized Crust: The hallmark of the Pequod's pizza is its unique, crispy, caramelized cheese edge. By placing a layer of mozzarella directly against the hot cast-iron pan, the kitchen creates a dark, flavorful crust that provides a satisfying crunch and a deep, nutty profile that contrasts beautifully with the softer interior of the dough.
Balanced Flavor Profiles: The sauce is crafted to provide a bright, savory counterpoint to the richness of the cheese and the density of the crust. Each component is measured to ensure that no single element overwhelms the palate, resulting in a harmonious bite that highlights the quality of the tomatoes and the blend of seasonings used in the kitchen.
Commitment to Consistency: Despite the high volume of orders and the popularity of the location, the team maintains a consistent output. This reliability is a cornerstone of their operation, ensuring that whether you are a first-time visitor or a long-time regular, the quality of the pizza remains true to the standards established by the founders.
A Welcoming Community Atmosphere: Beyond the food, the restaurant serves as a gathering space for the Morton Grove community. The interior design and service style foster a relaxed, unpretentious environment that encourages diners to slow down and enjoy their meal, making it a staple for family dinners, casual outings, and celebrations.
A Destination for Pizza Enthusiasts
Visiting the Pequod's Pizza on Fernald Avenue is an opportunity to engage with a piece of local culinary history. The combination of a time-honored baking technique, a focus on high-quality ingredients, and a genuine commitment to hospitality makes it a standout choice in the competitive landscape of Chicago-area dining. Whether you are a connoisseur of deep-dish styles or simply looking for a memorable meal in a classic setting, the experience offered here is defined by its authenticity and its dedication to the craft of pizza making. It remains a testament to the idea that when a kitchen focuses on perfecting a single, iconic product, the results speak for themselves, inviting guests to return time and again to enjoy a slice of tradition.

My boyfriend and I went there for lunch! It wasn’t busy, and we were seated right away (granted, we did reserve a seat the night before). We ordered a Caesar salad and a standard pan pizza with olives and green peppers. We waited about 20 minutes for our pizza to come out, which was fine since it was fresh! The pizza was pretty good, although the Caesar dressing tasted a bit diluted. Overall, it was a nice experience with good pizza and a great vibe. I would definitely come back again!

It's a small space but nice for small gatherings with friends! Parking is tough, service is good, non alcoholic drink options are very limited and unless you like the taste of burnt pizza don't do the pan pizza. The caramelized crust is … More

Excellent PAN pizza! This is not a deep dish chicago style pizza. But the pan pizza is delicious! We got sausage and pepperoni on ours. The sausage was excellent! The pepperoni was good...nothing special, but good. Sodas are free refills. Highly recommend! More

This pizza is excellent! We make an effort to go each time we’re in town. It’s deep dish without being super heavy. The sauce is delicious too! More

Deep Dish "pan" pizza lunch special with a Pequod IPA was the perfect lunch stop on my commute home from Milwaukee to Cleveland. I was rooting for the Guards, then the Brewers and now the Cubbies. More

the original location! quaint, tiny, slightly cramped seating and antiquated decor, constantly busy and filled with the low energy buzz of people passionate about the best kept secret of chicago since 1970, most delicious pizza i ever had in my life. get the meatballs.

I don't understand the hype. I hate writing this because besides one staff members, everyone else was soooo nice and sweet.
So you need a reservation or else, there is 4 bar seats or patio dining. I liked the bar, it was cozy. The mozz sticks were good. I couldn't get a pic of the whole thing because he dropped it & quickly slapped our slices on our plate, causing sauce to fling in spots. Alridy then!
The pizza was not good. I don' even know how I swallowed the first bite. The sauce has zero flavor, the pepperoni was barely cooked, sausage was good, the 3 pieces I had. Barely on my slice. Other than that, it was just dough. Not a fan. Definitely a over hyped up tourist spot. I love pizza! Any pizza actually. It's my number one food. So this was a huge disappointment.

Best pizza in the world. You will wait about 40 minutes for your pizza but it’s well worth the wait and the drinks and overall atmosphere make the wait seem shorter.

Disappointed. People rave about this place all the time. A friend even ordered from here recently and I thought it was pretty decent. But seems like consistency is not their thing as I ordered the SAME exact thing me and my friend got, and it was terrible. Looked like they just took a bunch of velvetta cheeses and put them on top…. Pizza was barely cut through…. And then on top of this, I had to wait 45 minutes for it…. And then to be charged actual money for this! Wow. Just wow.

Heard of this place first on Somebody Feed Phil and visited it for an early dinner in May 2025. Loved the cozy vibe of the place, set in a quiet neighbourhood. We didnt have a reservation so had to wait for about half an hour, but the deep dish pizzas were worth the wait. Busy but efficient staff, good food although fair warning- these pizzas can be pretty heavy so it's easy to over order! All in all a good experience!

We drove almost an hour to get here, and I have to say we had a really nice experience. The pizza and wings were very good and the Ceasar Salad was decent. Just being there felt like an old school 80s neighborhood bar with all around great service and cool atmosphere. I will definitely be a returning customer. More

Had 3 large pizzas for take out the size was definitely impressive and more than 10 people could eat. The flavor was decent Im not a huge fan of deep dish and it also couldve been longer in the oven! Wait time was ok about one hour. More

“Nobody goes there, it’s too crowded!” Don’t ever go here to pick up on a busy night! They oversell and the pickup system is based on pure chaos theory. That said, pretty good pizza as evidenced by people willing to wait in the cold without a clue where their order is. The appetizer wings weren’t bad, pretty good. More
