Located at 1 Front St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, Grimaldi's Pizzeria stands as a landmark destination for those seeking an authentic taste of New York City culinary history. Situated under the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, the restaurant has long been recognized for its commitment to traditional pizza-making techniques that have defined the local food scene for generations. Visitors from across the globe travel to this specific location not only for the meal itself but to experience the atmosphere of a neighborhood institution that remains deeply rooted in the fabric of Brooklyn life.
The philosophy at Grimaldi's centers on the belief that simplicity, when executed with high-quality ingredients and precise methods, creates an unparalleled dining experience. The environment is designed to be welcoming and unpretentious, reflecting the classic spirit of a neighborhood pizzeria where the focus remains entirely on the craft of the pie. Whether you are a long-time resident of New York or a first-time visitor exploring the historic streets of DUMBO, the restaurant offers a consistent and reliable connection to the city's storied pizza heritage.
Key Characteristics of the Grimaldi's Experience
Coal-Fired Tradition: The hallmark of the restaurant is its reliance on coal-fired ovens. This specific method of cooking provides a distinct flavor profile and a unique texture to the crust that is difficult to replicate with modern gas or electric alternatives. The intense, dry heat of the coal fire ensures that each pizza is cooked quickly, resulting in a perfectly charred exterior and a tender, airy interior.
Commitment to Quality Ingredients: Every component of the pizza, from the hand-crushed tomato sauce to the fresh mozzarella, is selected with care. By prioritizing high-quality, simple ingredients, the kitchen allows the natural flavors of the components to shine through without the need for excessive toppings or complex culinary gimmicks.
Historic Location: Being situated at 1 Front Street places the pizzeria in one of the most picturesque and historically significant areas of Brooklyn. The proximity to the waterfront and the Brooklyn Bridge provides a backdrop that enhances the overall dining experience, making it a natural stop for those walking through the neighborhood or visiting the nearby park areas.
Consistent Craftsmanship: The staff at Grimaldi's maintains a dedication to the time-honored techniques passed down through years of operation. This focus on consistency ensures that every guest receives a product that adheres to the high standards established by the brand's founders, preserving the integrity of the original vision.
The process of creating a pizza at Grimaldi's is one that respects the patience required for proper dough fermentation and the skill needed to manage a coal-fired oven. It is a labor-intensive approach that prioritizes the final quality of the product above all else. Because the ovens are fueled by coal, they require constant attention and expertise, a task that the kitchen team approaches with a level of professionalism that is evident in every slice served. This dedication to the craft is what allows the restaurant to maintain its reputation in a city known for its incredibly competitive and diverse pizza culture.
Beyond the food, the location serves as a gathering place where people from all walks of life come together to share a meal. The communal nature of the dining room, combined with the aroma of the coal-fired ovens, creates a sensory experience that is quintessentially New York. It is a place where the history of the neighborhood is palpable, and where the simple act of eating pizza becomes a way to participate in the ongoing story of Brooklyn. The restaurant does not rely on trends or fleeting culinary fashions; instead, it leans into the timeless appeal of a well-made, traditional pie that satisfies the palate and honors the history of its surroundings.
As you plan your visit to the DUMBO area, Grimaldi's Pizzeria remains a foundational stop for anyone interested in the authentic flavors of the borough. It is a testament to the idea that some things are best left unchanged, and that excellence is found in the consistent application of traditional methods. Whether you are stopping in for a quick lunch or settling in for a relaxed dinner with friends, the experience is defined by a commitment to quality, a respect for history, and a genuine passion for the art of pizza making. We invite you to visit 1 Front Street and discover why this location continues to be a cherished part of the Brooklyn culinary landscape.

Great pizza. They allowed us to do half veggie half ‘the don’. It was very good. The restaurant was decorated for Christmas and they had plenty of seating. We got right in at 11:30 am. When we left there was a line around the corner. More

That pizzeria is very famous not only in Brooklyn, but in whole New York City. We were 4 person, and had a large pie of veggies pizza from the brick oven on the 2nd floor. The nice view from the window, great atmosphere and fast service makes our visit unforgettable. More

What disappointing experience. This NYC pizza icon has really gone on the decline. To sum it up the place was dingy and dirty, the pizza was well done on top and doughy and under cooked on the bottom, the sauce had very little flavor. They … More

Touristy or not, their pizza is just that good! Well worth the wait. We were told it would be a 25 minute wait and were seated in less than 10 minutes. Great service, phenomenal pizza with the way it should be: delicious sauce, cheese and … More

Worth the wait time! Waited around 40 mins for a table for 3 of us but the food made up for it. We had one of the large pizzas between us and did half and half well enough. The servers were wonderful and provided recommendations! The atmosphere is very family friendly but also buzzing More

Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge is where the New York pizza argument starts and ends for me. Coal-fired oven thin crust that has that perfect char and chew fresh mozzarella that stretches and pulls exactly right and a tomato sauce that is bright and balanced without overpowering the cheese. This is not fancy pizza. This is not artisan pizza with truffle oil and microgreens. This is New York pizza done the way it was meant to be done and it is perfect. The line out the door is legendary and yes you will wait but the wait is part of the experience. Standing on the cobblestones of DUMBO looking up at the Brooklyn Bridge while you wait for one of the best pies in the city that is a New York moment. Cash only no slices whole pies only. You commit to the experience and the experience rewards you. The dining room is simple and packed and the energy is fantastic families tourists locals who have been coming here for decades all sitting elbow to elbow enjoying the same thing. I have eaten pizza in Naples Rome Chicago and everywhere in between. Grimaldi's holds its own against all of them. The simplicity is the genius. Great dough great sauce great cheese great oven. Do four things perfectly and you do not need a fifth. That is Grimaldi's and that is New York.

Recently, I had the chance to visit this well-known pizzeria under Brooklyn Bridge. I had the best pizza of my life! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, definitely a great spot.
However, the service was disappointing. I had to ask for the bill twice and ended up waiting 30 minutes, so in the end, I went to the bar to pay myself. Everything was just too slow.
That said, I still recommend this place and will definitely come back but plan your time accordingly!

Great food, long wait. We got there early (about 11:15am on a Monday) and waited 10 minutes to be seated. However, we waited over an hour for our single pizza. Once we got it, the Chef special "The Don" was delicious!!! We also tried the cannoli--with the powdered sugar, it was very sweet! Cost was incredibly reasonable...one of our cheapest restaurants, including fast food. As we left around 12:45pm, the line extended about a half a block out the door.

Grimaldi’s serves traditional coal-fired brick oven pizza. This is the most famous Grimaldi’s location, right next door to its original location. I tried the Brooklyn Bridge, which comes with roasted red peppers, creamy ricotta, Italian sausage, mozzarella, and a tomato sauce base, and The Don, topped with Italian sausage, meatballs, pepperoni, mozzarella, and tomato sauce. The ricotta on the Brooklyn Bridge wasn’t really my thing, but The Don was delicious. I also had their red sangria, which was very refreshing, and finished off with the Oreo cheesecake for dessert. Highly recommend! They offer three pizza sizes: 12”, 16”, and 18”. We ordered two 18-inch pizzas to share between four people. Even though my friends were pretty hungry, we still ended up with leftovers. In hindsight, two 16-inch pizzas would’ve been the perfect amount. We went on a Saturday around 3 p.m. and waited about 30 minutes outside before being seated, so definitely expect a line if you visit on the weekend.

Came here after waiting outside to enter another well known pizza joint nearby. At first I was a little concerned that Grimaldis would be a tourist trap at the expense of the food quality but I needn’t have worried. My 16 inch margarita pizza with mushrooms (kept it simple) came out steaming, with a crispy base and fresh tomato source. Can’t say like other reviewers whether it was the best pizza I’ve ever tasted, but it really was delicious. Servers were courteous and atmosphere nice.

We needed to recharge after a three hours walking tour in Brooklyn. As we entered, the inviting warmth of the restaurant. You can't beat the location or the flavor at Grimaldi's Pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge. We ordered the 18" split, with additional cost, featuring the signature BROOKLYN BRIDGE (ricotta, sausage, peppers--perfection!) and the beautifully simple MARGHERITA. The split was recommended by the server as we couldn't decide one toppings. The staff was wonderful! It was outstanding! Truly one of the best food experiences we had visiting New York!
