Located at 162 E Superior St in the heart of Chicago, Illinois, Gino's East stands as a significant landmark in the city's rich culinary landscape. For decades, this establishment has been synonymous with the authentic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza experience, drawing both locals and visitors to its doors. The restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it is a cultural touchstone that reflects the spirit of the Windy City. With its unique atmosphere and commitment to traditional preparation methods, Gino's East offers a dining environment that feels both nostalgic and welcoming, capturing the essence of Chicago's vibrant food scene.
Stepping into the restaurant, guests are immediately greeted by an environment that tells a story. The walls, famously covered in signatures and messages from patrons spanning generations, serve as a living archive of the countless memories made within these walls. This practice has turned the interior into a collaborative piece of art, making every visit feel like a contribution to the history of the establishment. Whether you are a long-time resident or a first-time traveler exploring the downtown area, the location on Superior Street provides an accessible and memorable destination for those seeking a genuine taste of Chicago heritage.
Defining Characteristics of the Experience
Authentic Deep-Dish Craftsmanship: The kitchen focuses on the time-honored techniques required to produce a classic Chicago deep-dish pizza. This involves a signature golden, buttery crust that provides the perfect foundation for layers of high-quality ingredients, including robust tomato sauce and generous portions of cheese.
A Living History: The interior design is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the restaurant. By allowing guests to leave their mark on the walls, the space fosters a sense of community and shared experience that is rarely found in modern dining establishments. It transforms a simple meal into a participatory event.
Prime Downtown Location: Situated at 162 E Superior St, the restaurant is perfectly positioned for those exploring the Magnificent Mile and the surrounding neighborhoods. Its proximity to major city attractions makes it an ideal stop for anyone looking to integrate a classic Chicago meal into their itinerary.
Cultural Significance: Beyond the food, the establishment represents a piece of Chicago's identity. It has maintained its relevance by staying true to its roots, offering a consistent experience that resonates with the values of comfort, quality, and community that define the local dining culture.
A Culinary Landmark
The appeal of Gino's East lies in its ability to balance the demands of a bustling city with the warmth of a neighborhood gathering spot. While the culinary world continues to evolve with new trends and fusion concepts, there remains a profound appreciation for the steadfast traditions maintained here. The focus on quality ingredients and the patience required to bake a proper deep-dish pizza ensures that the final product remains a benchmark for the style. It is this dedication to the craft that has allowed the brand to endure and thrive in a competitive market.
When you visit the Superior Street location, you are participating in a tradition that has helped shape the reputation of Chicago as a premier food destination. The combination of the iconic crust, the communal atmosphere created by the graffiti-covered walls, and the central location creates a holistic experience that is difficult to replicate. It is a testament to the idea that great food, when paired with a unique and welcoming environment, can create lasting impressions that extend far beyond the meal itself. For anyone looking to understand the heart of Chicago's culinary identity, a visit to this historic location remains an essential part of the journey.

Reuben R was our server and he was super attentive and kind, just outstanding. The pizza was everything Chicago and was perfect. The sauce had about 12 levels of flavor, and the quality of the meat was very evident. Just a great experience overall. More

The best Italian beef hands down! The service was wonderful. Online it showed that there was no availability for reservations for the day, we took a chance and got right in with no wait. The atmosphere was very comfortable, lots of seating and TVs for watching the games. I enjoyed my visit and wish I had room for the ice cream!!! More

Of all the deep dish I tried while in Chicago, Gino's East was the clear winner. We went with a half-and-half pizza to try different flavors, and it was absolutely incredible. The crust is legendary for a reason, but the flavor of the toppings and sauce really set it apart. It was easily the most flavorful meal of our trip—don't bother going anywhere else if you want the authentic superior experience!

We were picking between multiple deep dish places and wanted to give Gino’s a try, and we loved it! Our server was super friendly, the decor was very cool, and the food was delicious. Always prepare for a 45min bake for the deep dish pizza, so we ordered two salads to share, we got the kale Caesar and the harvest salad, both were good but the kale Caesar was amazing, and I’m still craving it. For pizza we got the spinach margherita (which was everyone’s favorite), Gino’s supreme (2nd favorite), and meaty legend. I like that you can do half and half to try multiple flavors. The crust was fabulous- it had great texture and flavor, and the sauce was great too.

Excellent food and service! We have been several times and it's always fantastic. We love the Chicago fire deep dish. The spicy kale ceasar was delicous as well. Yana, our server was the friendliest person we met while in Chicago. Thank you Yana and Ginos east!

Service and atmosphere was awesome, food was honestly mid. Thin crust is at the level of what I’d get buying tostinos pizza from the store, and spinach artichoke dip was alright, nothing to write home about, definitely needs to be warmer with more flavor.
Shout out to our server Paul.

My wife and I were visiting Chicago for a few days to celebrate her birthday and in pound Gino’s East through a Gemini recommendation!
The atmosphere is awesome, take time to look through the pictures on the walls up upstairs with all the celebrities and their notes. This is a great stop!
The food was delicious and very filling!
We ordered the sampler appetizer, highly recommend mozzarella sticks with ranch, very unique and delicious taste.
We have the four meat, deep dish, pizza, another hits. It was topped off with the birthday brownie pan!
And the service, top-notch!
Yana was so friendly and helpful, and just made the experience even better than it already was!
Thank you for a great experience for these visitors!

Our experience this evening at Gino’s was 10/10!! We’re visiting Chicago from out of town and had been recommended Gino’s by an acquaintance. It certainly didn’t disappoint! The deep dish and garlic bread were incredible and the atmosphere was very laid back and enjoyable. Blake was our server and he was extremely personable and such a joy to talk to! If we’re ever back in the city, we’ll definitely be back here!

Surprising Meatballs, but the Bread Couldn’t Handle the Heat
I originally came to Gino’s East on a recommendation to try their famous deep-dish pizza; I certainly didn't want to leave Chicago without tasting one of the city's most iconic dishes. However, once I arrived, I realized their signature pies are designed for 2–3 people and require at least 45 minutes to cook. Since I was in my final hour in the city and traveling solo—with no way to take leftovers on a plane—I pivoted and settled on the meatball sub instead.
I almost never order meatballs or a meatball sub at a restaurant. I make a pretty mean meatball at home, and I usually don't have much confidence that a restaurant's version will measure up. However, Gino’s meatballs were rich, flavorful, and moist, with a distinct Italian seasoning that was perfectly executed. I was very happy to find such high-quality meatballs, which came served with a side of French fries.
The "Structural" Issue My only real complaint is that the bread was quite lumpy and wet. While the tomato sauce was excellent, the bread simply couldn't stand up to it. I found myself wondering why the bread isn't made more resilient—perhaps toasted longer or even slightly charred—so it can hold its shape before dissolving into a wet dough by the time it reaches the table.
I tried "998 different ways" to hold the sandwich together, but it was impossible; the bread crumbled and the meatballs fell out with every attempt at a bite. I eventually had to ask for a fork to finish my meal. While the taste was great, a sub you can't actually pick up is a bit of a disappointment.
